Packers Fire Head Coach Mike McCarthy

Publish Date: December 2, 2018

The Green Bay Packers parted ways with their head coach following their 20-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals per ESPN insider Adam Schefter.

Mike McCarthy was the coach of the Packers for almost 13 seasons. Over those 13 seasons, he boasted a record of 125-72-2. He helped lead Green Bay to eight 10-win seasons, as well as three trips to the NFC Championship and a Super Bowl victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2010 season.

At 4-7-1, Green Bay appears to be headed for its worst finish since quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ first year as a starter in 2008. They finished 6-10 that season. Now, 10 years later (and coming off a 7-9 campaign largely chalked up to the absence of Rodgers), a similar finish wouldn’t be acceptable for the franchise.

“The 2018 season has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers. As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately. “Mike has been a terrific head coach and leader of the Packers for 13 seasons, during which time we experienced a great deal of success on and off the field.” CEO Mark Murphy said in the release.
