NFL Week 7 has come to a close, and we have plenty of storylines to cover as we wrap up the seventh weekend of NFL football. Aggressive defense, coaching hot seats, and opening trade markets headline the NFL Week Seven news. Here are some (potential) overreactions to the seventh slate.
The morning after the end of Week 7, news broke that Quenton Nelson was traded from the Colts to the Seahawks. Indianapolis received a third- and a fifth-round pick for the eight-time pro bowler. Nelson, who is on an expiring contract, will join a contending Seattle team that may have enough cap space to extend him. This move isn’t all that surprising, considering that there have been rumors circling for weeks about a Colts fire sale. The loss to Minnesota on Sunday may prove to be the shove that they need to start selling assets. Other names to watch include star RB Jonathan Taylor and DT DeForest Buckner.
Two other teams have been heavily rumored to be sellers in the near future. Both the Eagles and Chargers have had disappointing seasons and own a good amount of talent on their rosters. Names floated in trade rumors have included Saquon Barkley, Khalil Mack, Dallas Goedert, Riq Woolen, and Derwin James Jr. Even franchise QB Justin Herbert has been mentioned in trade rumors, though that would be a very surprising move, even for a Chargers team that continues to search for their first win of the season.
After Week Seven, there is only one undefeated team remaining in the NFL: the Minnesota Vikings. Both the 49ers and Chiefs lost this weekend, leaving Minnesota, who beat Indianapolis, on top of the mountain. The most surprising thing about the ascension of the Vikings may be just that, as many expected them to be middle of the pack this year. What is impressive, though, is how they have been able to win consistently without much semblance of an offense.
They are last in the league in total yards and second to last in passing yards. They also are dead last in touchdowns scored with a meager 10. Their unblemished record, then, comes down to how completely dominant their defense has been under the command of Brian Flores. They are holding opposing QBs to league-low numbers in passing yards and touchdowns, thanks to relentless blitzing out of Flores’s scheme. They recorded the highest blitz rate in a single game since at least 2016 against the Colts, blitzing over 85% of the time.
Green Bay lost their third game of the season on Sunday in Detroit in a game that featured sloppy play from both teams. Unfortunately for the Packers, this has become a trend throughout the 2026 season.
Potentially the most glaring issue for Green Bay is their kicking game. This has been an issue dating back to the departure of longtime kicker Mason Crosby after the 2022 season. Since then, they have cycled through kickers with minimal success. The latest of which is rookie Trey Smack, who they selected in the sixth round of the draft. He missed two kicks in Sunday’s game, one from 35 yards and the other from 26 yards. Those missed chip shots left points on the board that were desperately needed in a three-point loss.
Drops and penalties are other errors that continue to plague the Packers. They are stats that teams and players never want to lead the league in. Unfortunately, Green Bay leads in a few categories. WR Matthew Golden leads the league in drops with six. Their defense also leads the NFL in penalties, penalty yards, and roughing the passer calls. Fans continue to clamor for these mistakes to be cleaned up, and they just keep happening.
The Ravens played their third-straight game without superstar QB Lamar Jackson on Sunday, and it culminated in another loss for Baltimore. In a game where the Ravens needed offense to match the high-flying Bengals attack, they managed only 13 points, all in the first half. It is their second straight loss to a divisional opponent, and in both, their offensive output was minimal.
It comes as no shock that a team performs worse without their MVP-caliber quarterback. They are just 7-13 in games without Jackson since he was drafted. It is obvious, then, that they need him back as soon as possible. Their offensive output this season dropped from about 29 points per game with Jackson to just 17 without him.
The Jets started out this season looking like they could be a decent story. They won their first game in commanding fashion. Then, played good games in losses against two solid teams, the Packers and Lions. The good vibes have been fading fast over the past few weeks. They hit a new low as they handed their division rival Miami Dolphins their first win on Sunday.
A new stat was shared across broadcasts and social media after that disappointing loss that brings into question Glenn’s efficacy as a head coach. Per SNY Jets: “The Jets have been outscored 107-6 in the final 2:00 of the first half during Aaron Glenn’s tenure as head coach.” That is a shocking stat for a coach like Glenn, who, coming in from Detroit, looked like he would be a tone-setter for a much-maligned Jets franchise. Instead, they have continued to be a basement dweller, and Glenn’s seat is red-hot.
