The NFL season is here. Picking NFL games straight up is hard enough, but picking against the spread is even tougher. Here are NFL week 5 picks against the spread. (Spreads are from Tallysight as of Tuesday morning)
Last week: 9-6-1
Season: 27-34-3
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys (-8.5)
Tampa Bay is starting undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels in place of Baker Mayfield. It will be hard for him to keep up with Dak Prescott on a short-week road game.
Pick: Cowboys
Philadelphia Eagles at Jacksonville Jaguars (-6.5) (Game in London, England)
The Eagles are struggling right now and playing the Jaguars isn’t a solution. Jacksonville’s defense has been great and the offense should do enough to cover in London.
Pick: Jaguars
Chicago Bears (-3) at Green Bay Packers
Chicago is playing well with backup quarterbacks, aided by running the ball well. In a tough division road game, that might be hard to do. Green Bay isn’t playing well, but they should battle well against backup quarterbacks, even if they are playing well.
Pick: Packers
Cincinnati Bengals (-7) at Miami Dolphins
T.J. Hockenson went down at the one-yard line for the Vikings and the Dolphins covered the spread for the first time of the season. Cincinnati has injury issues to their wide receivers, but they should still be able to do enough to cover against the Dolphins.
Pick: Bengals
Minnesota Vikings (-1.5) at New Orleans Saints
Brian Flores has his defense playing well and Kyler Murray is doing enough to get wins. The defense can confuse Tyler Shough, who has been inconsistent this season.
Pick: Vikings
Houston Texans (-6.5) at Tennessee Titans
Neither of these teams has won a game. The Texans have not played well defensively, despite the hype they received before the season. This is a game they should be able to get things going, as the Titans struggle to score. With C.J. Stroud playing well, they can cover on the road.
Pick: Texans
Las Vegas Raiders at New England Patriots (-3.5)
The Patriots had their best offensive game last week against the Bills and that momentum could help them against the Raiders. Las Vegas is playing well, but it will be tough to keep it within a field goal in a game that is early and across the country.
Pick: Patriots
Indianapolis Colts at Pittsburgh Steelers (-2.5)
The Colts needed a while to get going in London and now travel back to the States. Pittsburgh has had extra time to prepare for this game, but the offense will not have enough playmakers to cover at home.
Pick: Colts
Cleveland Browns at New York Jets (-1.5)
Cleveland is on fire right now, but the Jets have a solid defense and have played some tough offenses the last few weeks. The Jets can slow down Cleveland and score enough to cover at home.
Pick: Jets
New York Giants at Washington Commanders (-3.5)
The Giants have only lost to the Rams this season. Defensively, they have played well and the offense has done enough to get wins. Washington could get Jayden Daniels back this week, but that isn’t a sure thing.
Pick: Giants
Denver Broncos (-3.5) at Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles is struggling to score points and they are turning over the ball too much. Denver’s offense isn’t playing the best either, but the defense can limit the Chargers and help them cover.
Pick: Broncos
San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks (-3)
The Seahawks have injury issues at running back, which could really hurt them against the 49ers. Brock Purdy is playing efficient football and the 49ers are running the ball well. They could at least keep it close on the road if not win outright.
Pick: 49ers
Detroit Lions (-4.5) at Arizona Cardinals
Detroit’s defense has been bad, but their offense should be good enough to cover against the Cardinals. Arizona is giving up 29.3 points per game and may not be able to keep up with the Lions.
Pick: Lions
Baltimore Ravens at Atlanta Falcons (-1.5)
Lamar Jackson is questionable for this one, but even if he is out, Tyler Huntley has played well in his absence. The Ravens can limit the Falcons’ offense and can win on the road, even if Jackson is out.
Pick: Ravens
Buffalo Bills at Los Angeles Rams (-2.5)
The Bills’ defense has let them down and that isn’t a good recipe when they go on the road to play the Rams. Los Angeles should get a few key stops to win and cover at home.
Pick: Rams
