NFL Week 5 is here. Picking NFL games straight up is hard enough, but picking against the spread is even tougher. Here are the NFL week 5 picks against the spread. (Spreads are from Tallysight as of Tuesday morning)
Last Week: 6-10
Season: 31-30-3
Thursday Night Football
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons (-1.5)
The Buccaneers got things back on track against the Eagles, winning big in week 4. Atlanta took advantage of some mistakes by the Saints, but didn’t play to their potential last week. Tampa Bay’s wide receivers will help them move the ball and keep the game close if not help them win the game.
Pick: Buccaneers
Sunday Morning
New York Jets at Minnesota Vikings (-2.5) (Game in London)
The Jets have struggled already this season and going to London isn’t a great recipe for success, especially as they have to go up against a Brian Flores defense. Until the Jets prove they have figured things out, it is hard to pick them against a good team.
Pick: Vikings
Sunday Afternoon
Cleveland Browns at Washington Commanders (-3)
Cleveland continues to struggle moving the ball downfield. Washington doesn’t have those same issues with Jayden Daniels at quarterback, so they should win and cover.
Pick: Commanders
Baltimore Ravens (-2.5) at Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals have real issues stopping the run. They don’t have the bodies upfront to do well in that area. Baltimore is on fire right now, running the ball extremely well. Their defense can force enough stops to win and cover.
Pick: Ravens
Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans (-1)
Houston has a talented team, but they haven’t really played as well as last year yet. The Bills didn’t play well on Sunday Night Football, but Josh Allen has had a good start to the season and can help his team win on the road.
Pick: Bills
Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars (-2.5)
The Jaguars are a mess. Offensively, the gameplan and playcalling has not resulted in success. Whether it is Anthony Richardson or Joe Flacco at quarterback, the Colts can win on the road, even if Jonathan Taylor can’t play.
Pick: Colts
Carolina Panthers at Chicago Bears (-4)
After playing well in week 3, Andy Dalton cooled off a bit against the Bengals in week 4. The Bengals don’t have the greatest defense, but the Bears have been playing well on that side of the ball. Chicago’s offense seems like it is starting to come together as well.
Pick: Bears
Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots (-1)
The Dolphins are a mess without Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback. Tyler Huntley can be more successful with more time to learn the offense. Either way, this will likely be a low-scoring game and the Dolphins have more playmakers.
Pick: Dolphins
Sunday Evening
Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers (-7.5)
The 49ers are dealing with injuries to several key players. They are still playing well, but other teams may be able to keep things close. Kyler Murray’s playmaking could keep this within a touchdown, even in a loss.
Pick: Cardinals
Las Vegas Raiders at Denver Broncos (-3)
The Raiders had several key players out against the Browns and still got the win. They can do the same against the Broncos, even with Bo Nix playing a little better.
Pick: Raiders
Green Bay Packers (-3.5) at Los Angeles Rams
Green Bay looked bad early against the Vikings’ defense, but that is normal. The Packers getting Jordan Love back last week is good news. They should be able to take advantage of the Rams’ run defense in this game to win and cover on the road.
Pick: Packers
New York Giants at Seattle Seahawks (-6.5)
The Giants have extra time to prepare for this one, while the Seahawks will be on a short week. Geno Smith is playing well in Ryan Grubb’s system, so they should be able to put up enough points to cover the spread.
Pick: Seahawks
Sunday Night Football
Dallas Cowboys at Pittsburgh Steelers (-2.5)
The Cowboys’ run defense has been bad, but they can sell out to stop the run against the Steelers. Justin Fields has made smart decisions, but he may not be able to keep up with the Cowboys’ offense.
Pick: Cowboys
Monday Night Football
New Orleans Saints at Kansas City Chiefs (-5.5)
New Orleans had a fast start to the season, but that has come to a halt. Kansas City lost Rashee Rice last week to an injury, but the still have enough weapons to score on the Saints.
Pick: Chiefs
