NFL Week 5 Picks Against the Spread

Publish Date: October 5, 2021

NFL Week 5 is here. Picking NFL games straight up is hard enough, but picking against the spread is even tougher. Here are the NFL week 5 picks against the spread. (Spreads are from tallysight as of Tuesday afternoon)

Last week: 10-6, Season total: 29-34-1

NFL Week 5 Picks Against the Spread

Thursday Night Football

Los Angeles Rams (-2.5) at Seattle Seahawks

The Rams had a bad game against the Cardinals, but overall this season has been a success. Matthew Stafford has been lighting up the scoreboard and the Seahawks offense will not be able to keep up.

Pick: Rams

Sunday Morning

New York Jets vs. Atlanta Falcons (-3.5) *In London

In the first London game of the year, the Jets matchup with the Falcons. The Jets got their first win of the season over the Titans in an upset. There are still a lot of questions surrounding the Jets. Atlanta, on the other hand, at least has a solid offense, which showed up in week 4. The Falcons will outscore the Jets.

Pick: Falcons

Sunday Afternoon

Philadelphia Eagles at Carolina Panthers (-3.5)

The Eagles have looked better than expected, but the Panthers’ defense has been solid. Carolina has Sam Darnold playing solidly and with their defense playing at a good level, the Panthers should be able to cover at home.

Pick: Panthers

Green Bay Packers (-3.5) at Cincinnati Bengals

While Cincinnati is 3-1, this line is a little too close. Green Bay has rebounded from their week 1 loss to win three straight. Both Aaron Jones and Aaron Rodgers are playing well and will be too much for the Bengals’ defense.

Pick: Packers

New England Patriots (-9.5) at Houston Texans

Mac Jones is having trouble beating defenses deep. The Texans can load the box and play for the run and short routes. The Patriots will likely still win, but the Texans can keep it within the spread.

Pick: Texans

Tennessee Titans (-3.5) at Jacksonville Jaguars

A loss to the Jets was surprising for the Titans, but they have still played solidly overall this year. Jacksonville has its fair share of distractions and lockerroom problems this week.

Pick: Titans

Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings (-7.5)

Detroit has been playing hard despite not being expected to have a good season. They should be able to keep it close against a division rival, who has been inconsistent from week to week.

Pick: Lions

Denver Broncos at Pittsburgh Steelers (-0.5)

The Steelers can not get that offense going and it isn’t likely to start being effective until the offensive line improves. Even if it does, Ben Roethlisberger still can’t stretch defenses vertically. No matter who is at quarterback for the Broncos, they should be able to go on the road and beat the Steelers thank to their defense.

Pick: Broncos

Miami Dolphins at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-10.5)

Tampa Bay is coming off an emotional and dramatic win on the road in New England. The Dolphins are lacking great quarterback play, but have a decent defense. Other than a blowout loss to the Bills, Miami has kept every game within 10 points.

Pick: Dolphins

New Orleans Saints (-2.5) at Washington Football Team

The Saints are not an easy team to figure out. They have gone 2-2 with wins over the Packers and Patriots, but have losses to the Panthers and Giants. Washington’s defense hasn’t lived up to the hype yet, but they could have a solid performance to get things going against the Saints and Jameis Winston. Taylor Heinicke is also playing solidly.

Pick: Washington

Sunday Evening

Cleveland Browns at Los Angeles Chargers (-1.5)

Cleveland struggled on the road against Minnesota. The Chargers, on the other hand, have looked like one of the best teams in the league. With the Chargers being at home, they should win and cover.

Pick: Chargers

Chicago Bears at Las Vegas Raiders (-5.5)

Khalil Mack gets to play against his old team, albeit in a new city. The Raiders have played better than expected this season, while the Bears have had trouble getting their offense going. With the Raiders having a distinct home-field advantage, they should win and cover.

Pick: Raiders

San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals (-5.5)

San Francisco looks like they will start Trey Lance with Jimmy Garoppolo being injured. It is a tough first matchup to have going up against the Cardinals. Kyler Murray is firing on all cylinders right now and shouldn’t be picked against.

Pick: Cardinals

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys (-8.5)

Not many expected the Dallas defense to be playing this well. It is a huge reason why the team is 3-1, even though the offense has been incredibly good. New York played well against the Saints, but have to go back on the road for this game.

Pick: Cowboys

Sunday Night Football

Buffalo Bills at Kansas City Chiefs (-2.5)

The two projected best teams in the AFC should have a very close game. Kansas City has more losses (2) than most would’ve thought at this point in the season and are still figuring things out. The Bills are playing well after their week 1 loss to the Steelers. Kansas City may win because they are at home, but the Bills will at least keep it close.

Pick: Bills

Monday Night Football

Indianapolis Colts at Baltimore Ravens (-7.5)

Things look better for Indy after they got a win over Miami. They still don’t have a quarterback that can consistently move the ball, which will make it a long day for their defense against this Ravens’ rushing attack. The Ravens will control the clock and win by more than a touchdown.

Pick: Ravens
