NFL Week 5 Picks Against the Spread

Publish Date: October 7, 2020

NFL week 5 is here. Picking NFL games straight up is hard enough, but picking against the spread is even tougher. Here are the NFL week 5 picks against the spread. (Spreads are from espn.com as of Wednesday morning)

Last week: 10-5, Overall: 39-24

Thursday Night

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-3.5) at Chicago Bears

Chicago has trouble moving the ball, no matter who the quarterback is this season. Tampa Bay is firing on all cylinders and should be able to cover on the road.

Pick: Buccaneers

Sunday Afternoon

Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens (-13)

The Bengals have had trouble tackling and protecting the quarterback this season. Baltimore will be able to expose these weaknesses and cover the spread.

Pick: Ravens

Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons (-2)

Carolina has been gritty this season without Christian McCaffrey. Atlanta has struggled this season and morale is likely low. The Panthers will be able to at least keep the game close.

Pick: Panthers

Buffalo Bills at Tennessee Titans

There is no line on this game yet, as the Titans deal with COVID. The Bills should be picked to win, but this game will be updated once a line is released.

Pick: Bills

Las Vegas Raiders at Kansas City Chiefs

With the Chiefs battling COVID, there is also no line on this game yet. Kansas City is a much better team than the Riaders and should be picked. This will be updated once a line is released.

Pick: Chiefs

Arizona Cardinals (-7) at New York Jets

The Cardinals have been struggling after a hot start, but they are simply a much better team than the Jets.

Pick: Cardinals

Philadelphia Eagles at Pittsburgh Steelers (-7)

Philadelphia got a big win this past weekend, but they still have a lot of issues as a team. Pittsburgh has solid units on both sides of the ball. The Eagles won’t be able to keep it close.

Pick: Steelers

Los Angeles Rams (-7) at Washington Football Team

The Washington Football Team has announced Kyle Allen will start at quarterback. Sean McVay’s squad was already projected to win. Now, they should be expected to win by a lot.

Pick: Rams

Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans (-6)

Houston just fired Bill O’Brien. Long term, that is a very good move, but it creates a lot of problems for this weekend. The Jaguars don’t have much talent on their roster, but they battle tough. They’ll keep this one close.

Pick: Jags

Sunday Evening

Miami Dolphins at San Francisco 49ers

This is another game that doesn’t have a line on it. The 49ers should be picked to win, as the Dolphins are traveling cross-country and still have some work to do in their rebuild.

Pick: 49ers

Indianapolis Colts (-1.5) at Cleveland Browns

The Browns got a big win over the Cowboys, but Dallas is allowing anyone to score. The Colts play great defense and run the ball well. They should be able to cover against the Browns.

Pick: Colts

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots

The theme of the week is games without spreads. In either case, the Patriots should be picked to win, even with Cam Newton out.

Pick: Patriots

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys (-9.5)

Dallas is getting exactly what they needed this week. The Giants are turnover-prone and don’t have the fire-power to keep up with the Cowboys.

Pick: Cowboys

Sunday Night

Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks (-7)

Minnesota got a win over the Texans, but still have a lot of issues. The Seahawks are playing well and Russell Wilson is leading the charge. Their defense is shaky, but Wilson and the offense will help them cover.

Pick: Seahawks

Monday Night

Los Angeles Chargers at New Orleans Saints (-7.5)

Justin Herbert and the Chargers’ defense has played well. The Saints haven’t been playing up to their potential recently and even possibly getting Michael Thomas back may not help that.

Pick: Chargers
