NFL league executives have announced that the NFL Pro Bowl has been eliminated. The league will still hand out yearly Pro Bowl honors but will no longer host its All-Star game.
There have been numerous tweaks and adjustments to the Pro Bowl over the last few decades, altering the event from tackle football to flag football and implementing changes year after year. However, it looks like the Pro Bowl and its future have now been put to rest, making the NFL the first major U.S. professional sports league to eliminate its All-Star game.
Eighty-eight players will receive the Pro Bowl honor with no alternates and will also be invited to Los Angeles for an in-person celebration in February.
The NFL has had an extremely tough time in recent years finding the right balance between a competitive Pro Bowl game while also remaining safe. They have modified the Pro Bowl almost annually since 2013, but ratings have steadily decreased since the Pro Bowl moved to flag football and skills challenges post-pandemic.
