The NFL has approved a rule to allow teams to dress a third quarterback according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Teams will be able to dress a third quarterback as long as they are on the 53-man roster. They will not be able to play the third quarterback unless the starter and backup are injured.
The rule change stems from the NFC Championship Game this past season when the 49ers had quarterback injuries during the game and had to play Brock Purdy after he had torn his UCL.
Teams will now be able to dress 47 players on game day. The previous number was 46, with several players from the 53-man roster being inactive.
