New York Jets Sign Offensive Tackle Morgan Moses

Publish Date: June 28, 2021

The New York Jets are signing Offensive Tackle Morgan Moses to a 1-year, $3.6 million deal. Another great deal for a valuable player, Joe Douglas continues to spoil Zach Wilson with what Sam Darnold wishes he had: an offensive line.

The move looks even better when you consider how cheap this deal is. For comparison, his deal with the Washington Football Team was valued at five-years, $38.5 million. This means that for less than half of what the WFT paid for him, the Jets have an above average offensive lineman, giving Wilson his book-end offensive tackles.

Flexibility is Key

His team-friendly contract also gives the Jets a lot of flexibility financially. Should Moses play as well as he has been for the past couple of years, the Jets could opt to extend him. If he takes a step back this year, they can choose to let him test free agency in 2022. The entire situation is a win-win for the Jets, who have an entirely different aura about them than they have in recent years.

Moses finished 2020 with an 80.5 PFF grade, placing him comfortably in the top half of all offensive lineman. He dominated as a run blocker, as evidenced by Antonio Gibson’s 4.7 yards per carry, but he did not do quite as well as a pass blocker. He allowed five sacks in 2020, three more than the incumbent right tackle George Fant, but he makes up for this in other areas.

Not only is Morgan Moses a dominant run blocker, but he hasn’t missed a start in six years. This gives the Jets flexibility, should injury-riddled Mekhi Becton need time off this year. Fant can swing to Left Tackle, and not much is lost.

“In Joe D We Trust”

Joe Douglas continues to impress as he builds his next super team in Florham Park. He has improved the offense more in two seasons than any GM has for the Jets in 20 years. He is improving the Offensive Line little by little, getting value out of every deal he makes. Jets fans are optimistic, and this move is just one of the many reasons.
