O’Connell, 36, has been the Rams offensive coordinator for the last two seasons. The offense ranked sixth in the league in points per game at 27.2.
Before his time with the Rams, O’Connell spent time in Washington for three seasons in various roles including quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. He has also spent time with the Browns and 49ers.
During his playing days, O’Connell bounced around the league after playing quarterback at San Diego State. He spent time on the Patriots, Lions, Jets, Dolphins and Chargers during his NFL career. O’Connell passed for 23 yards in the NFL.
The new head coach will take over for Mike Zimmer, who was fired following the season. O’Connell will lead a team that finished 8-9 during the 2021 season.
Minnesota can’t make the hiring official until after the Super Bowl.
