Maurkice Pouncey, the well-known center for the Pittsburgh Steelers, retired Friday after playing for the team for 10 years.
The announcement was made last Friday by Ramon Foster, a former Steeler who is close to Pouncey. His brother, Mike Pouncey, also retired from the Miami Dolphis the same day.
“It’s my honor that my brothers from another asked me to announce the next stage in their life. After over a decade Maurkice Pouncey and Mike Pouncey are RETIRING from the @nfl.” Foster announced in his tweet Friday.
(Markice) Pouncey signed with the Steelers in 2010, being a first-round pick, during the NFL draft (picked 18th overall). During his time with the Steelers, he went to the Pro Bowl nine times and also joined the 2010 Hall of Fame team. The Steelers also named him a first-team All Pro twice. He played a total of 134 football games.
His twin brother, Mike Pouncey, was drafted the following year in 2011, by the Miami Dolphins. After seven seasons, however, he was cut from the team following the end of the 2017 season. In 2018, he signed with the Los Angeles Rams, and even made it to the Pro-bowl. However, a recent hip injury this past season ended his 2020 run. It’s unclear if the injury has anything to do with his resignation.
Maurkice Pouncey’s Influence on Big Ben’s decision
With Pouncey’s (Maurkice) retirement, Steelers fans wonder if this move will effects Ben “Big Ben” Roethlisberger decision in playing in the upcoming season.
Pouncey and Roethlisberger are close friends. So close that Roethlisberger told Pouncey that “he came back because of him.” With Pouncey now finished with his NFL career, after their loss to the Cleveland Browns in the playoffs. If true to his word, Roethlisbergers future with the Steelers looks unclear at the moment with his friend now retiring.
Roethlisberger and the Steelers are currently negotiating a new contract for the next season. However, with former Washington Football Team quarterback, Dwayne Haskins on the roster, it could mean a new era is about to begin.
