The Minnesota Vikings have their kicker for 2018.
Kai Forbath has re-signed with the Vikings on a one-year deal, the team announced on Wednesday. Although the details of the contract have not been released, Forbath told the Twin Cities Pioneer Press that it will be a “small raise” from his 2017 salary of $775,000. The deal will likely be worth roughly $1 million.
What the Vikings are getting
Since joining the team in the middle of the 2016 season, Forbath has been a solid kicker for the Vikings. In 2018, Forbath hit 32 of his 38 field goal attempts, including 6-for-9 from over 50 yards.
Although he may not be the most accurate kicker in the NFL, Forbath has shown that he can deliver in the clutch. Forbath went 6-for-6 against the Baltimore Ravens, and delivered a game-winner in Week 5 against the Chicago Bears. He also made three field goals in a tight playoff matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
Oddly enough, Forbath’s main concern has been kicking extra points. He only made 87.2 percent of his extra-point attempts last season, which is one of the lowest in the league.
After the repeated struggles of Blair Walsh, it seems for now that the Vikings have found an answer at the kicker position.
Other Vikings re-signings
The team has also announced that they have re-signed safety Anthony Harris, running back Mack Brown and defensive tackle Dylan Bradley. The most notable of these re-signings is Harris, who has been a solid backup so far in his career.
Harris started three games in 2017, filling in for the injured Andrew Sendejo. In those three games, the backup safety earned 11 tackles and two recovered fumbles.
Both Brown and Bradley have yet to start an NFL game.
