Jahmyr Gibbs Becomes Highest-Paid RB in NFL History With New Extension

Jahmyr Gibbs and the Detroit Lions have agreed to a three-year, $75.75 million extension with $51.5 million guaranteed, officially making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history.

Just a few days ago, Falcons running back Bijan Robinson inked a new deal to become the highest-paid running back in NFL history, but Gibbs has now edged him out for that title in what has been a historic week for running backs. Gibbs now has the highest average annual value (APY) and the highest guarantee ever for a running back.

Gibbs had been engaged in a hold-in during training camp, participating in team meetings but opting out of team drills while attempting to leverage a new contract. His strategy worked, as Robinson’s new deal likely influenced Gibbs’ negotiations and helped both sides reach a new agreement in Detroit.

Gibbs has been electric ever since he was drafted by Detroit in 2023 and has career totals of 675 carries for 3,580 rushing yards and 39 rushing touchdowns in 49 career games. Gibbs is also one of the best dual-threat running backs in the NFL, with 181 receptions for 1,449 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns.

Gibbs had a strong season with Detroit last year, totaling 1,839 all-purpose yards and 18 total touchdowns. Gibbs is clearly a huge part of Detroit’s offense and will be paired with new signing Isaiah Pacheco in the backfield following the departure of David Montgomery in the offseason.
