For the entirety of the offseason Clowney was seen as the best defensive free agent to hit the market. He was linked to multiple teams including his former team the Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, and most of all his 2020 destination the Tennessee Titans.
Around this time last season the Houston Texans traded Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks in a blockbuster including Jacob Martin, Barkevious Mingo, and a third round pick. However Clowney did disappoint last season statistically by only racking up three sacks with the Seahawks last season. However he was considered one of the best run defenders in the league last season. In fact PFF gives Clowney the second highest grade against the rush among edge defenders since he entered the league in 2014.
Clowney was taken first overall by the Texans back in 2014. After a few rough seasons, Clowney went to three Pro Bowls in a row between 2016 and 2018. In 2016 Clowney was voted a Second Team All-Pro. He has never had more than 9.5 sacks in a single season. Throughout his six years in the league Clowney has 32 sacks, 14 passes defended, 8 forced fumbles, and 8 fumble recoveries.
He will be joining an impressive defensive unit from a season ago with names like Kevin Byard, Harold Landry, Jeffrey Simmons, Rashaan Evans, Kenny Vaccaro, Malcom Butler, Adoree’ Jackson, Jayon Brown, and Vic Beasley.
