Is Patrick Mahomes the leader in a new “Golden Age” of Quarterbacks?

Patrick McCawBy Patrick McCawJune 29, 20223 Mins Read

Patrick Mahomes has been an almost unstoppable player and fan favorite since becoming the Chiefs starting quarterback. With many young talented quarterbacks in today’s game, is Mahomes at the top of the food chain?

    The New Golden Age

With the past era of quarterbacks mostly retired can the NFL’s new era of quarterbacks live up to recent legends? Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers led the quarterback era known as the “golden age” of passers. But with every new draft class there is a new quarterback who changes the way the position is played. Most recently Lamar Jackson of the Ravens is playing in a completely different way from the past Hall of Famers.

The new golden age of quarterbacks is upon us as the youngsters might be the most talented group of players at the position we have seen in quite some time. Among these players is Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert. Each of these young players has either impressed with their natural talent, won awards or made major playoff runs to cement their place in the NFL’s quarterback hierarchy. Time will tell how all of these players will pan out, but the question is who is the Tom Brady of this era?

    Is Patrick Mahomes the leader?

Ever since Mahomes took the starting role in Kansas City in 2018 one could argue he has been the face of the NFL. In four years as the starter Mahomes has been to four Pro Bowls, AP All-Pro 1st team and 2nd team, one NFL MVP award and has only had one year with less than 4500 passing yards. Not to mention already appearing in two Super Bowls, winning one of them.

If any one was to challenge Mahomes status as the leader in this new quarterback age it would most likely be Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Allen’s passing ability and throwing power isn’t matched by many in the NFL.  He is also an electric runner of the football as he made many plays hurdling defenders. Although Allen has yet to obtain a NFL MVP award or a Super Bowl appearance his talent matches up to Patrick Mahomes the best out of the rest of the field. Mahomes has actually been the road block to Allen getting to the Super Bowl as the Chiefs defeated the Bills in the playoffs each of the last two seasons.

Out of any quarterback in this new era Mahomes easily has the best resume. Not a single other player listed above has the combination of winning an MVP and has a Super Bowl win. It’s safe to say as of now Patrick Mahomes has taken the reigns of the new golden age of quarterbacks and as of now looks like the man to fear for the next 10 years.
