Hunter Greene has finally earned a contract extension. The Cincinnati Reds have reportedly signed Greene, a right-handed pitcher, to a six-year, $53 million contract extension. His contract runs through 2028, with a club option in 2029.
The Reds’ official Twitter account tweeted about the news on Tuesday evening.
Greene, a Los Angeles native, became the second overall pick of the entire 2017 MLB Draft, after most projected him to be the first overall pick. He began making his way through the minor league ranks in 2017, finally making his MLB debut in April of 2022.
In his rookie year, Greene went 5-13 in 24 games started on a Cincinnati Reds team that tied for last place with the Pirates. After 125.2 innings pitched, his ERA stood at 4.44 at the end of the season. He pitched one complete game shutout and struck out 164 batters in 2023.
