The Washington Football Team has signed an emergency quarterback to start Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Veteran backup Garrett Gilbert signed with Washington on Friday and will start just two days later in Week 15.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news via Twitter on Friday.
Washington’s top two QBs, Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen, are now on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, leaving Garrett Gilbert – who is signing today with the WFT – in line to start Sunday vs. Philadelphia.

Gilbert was signed quickly due to Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen being placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list ahead of Week 15’s matchup. These placements are just some of the latest in a rash of positive COVID-19 tests throughout the NFL.
A veteran who entered the league in 2014 with the St. Louis Rams’ practice squad, Gilbert has spent time with eight NFL teams, including Washington. He started a game for the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9 of 2020 after Dak Prescott and Andy Dalton were unavailable. That was his only start in the NFL prior to this Sunday. He completed 21 of 38 pass attempts, threw one touchdown and one interception in a loss.
