One of the most prolific running backs in the history of the NFL has taken one last step toward retirement. Frank Gore is signing a one day contract with the San Francisco 49ers so he can retire with the team for which he played the most seasons.
The NFL’s official Twitter account announced the news and gave a brief list of some of Gore’s accomplishments.
Gore was drafted out of the University of Miami by the 49ers in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He played for San Francisco 10 seasons before signing with the Colts in 2015. After three seasons with Indianapolis, he signed one-year contracts with the Dolphins, Bills and Jets. He did not play in 2021, making his final tally 16 seasons in the NFL.
A five-time Pro Bowler, Gore holds the record for third-most carries and rushing yards in NFL history. He also holds the record for the most NFL games played at running back at 241. He’ll end his career with an even 16,000 yards.
