Amidst what is going on in the world today with all of the movements to end racial injustices in the world, Fed-Ex has asked the Washington Redskins to change their name.
The significance of FedEx making this request is the fact that their organization is closely involved with the Washington Redskins. FedEx owns the rights to the stadium where the Redskins play. The President and CEO of FedEx Frederick Smith is also a minority owner of the Washington Redskins‘ franchise.
There was pressure on FedEx to make this request after investors asked to end relations with the team because how their name could offend those with Native American heritage. Nike and PepsiCo have felt similar pressure to do the same by their investors.
There has been pressure in the past for the Washington franchise to change their name. But with how much the United States and the world wants to fix any racial injustice, they might feel the most pressure they ever have.
The Redskins have until 2025 to responded the to FedEx’s request. That is when The names-right deal for the Redskins stadium is up for FedEx. If the Redskins do not comply to FedEx’s ask, the two sides could be headed towards a messy breakup down the road.
So far the Washington Redskins have not responded to FedEx’s ask. They will likely put out a statement within the next few days.
