The Eagles added another quarterback to their roster over the week, Nick Mullens signed with the Eagles. He is now the fourth quarterback on the depth chart. The other three quarterbacks are Jalen Hurts, Joe Flacco and Jamie Newman. The Eagles seem to be adding more depth to the quarterback position in order to have more choices going into the 2021 season. This article will provide insight on who Mullens is, what he has done in the NFL so far and how he can possibly provide help to the Eagles in 2021. This is another edition of the Eagles Player Spotlight on Nick Mullens.

Mullens at Southern Miss
Nick Mullens was a stud at Southern Miss, as he was named Conference USA player of the Year in 2015. He also brought the Golden Eagles to two bowl games during his last two seasons at Southern Miss. In college, Mullens was a gunslinger. During his spectacular 2015 season, he racked up over 4,000 passing yards and passed for 38 touchdowns. This gave him the accolade of ranking number two in passing touchdowns in Conference USA since 1996. He followed the 2015 season with another good year during his senior season. He had over 3,000 passing yards and 24 touchdowns and he left college football as one of the Group of 5 quarterbacks.
His career in the NFL at San Francisco
Mullens signed with San Francisco as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He was waived by the 49ers once, in his first attempt to make the team. Then the 49ers signed him back to the practice squad later that year and ultimately made the main roster. He subbed in for starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo after he suffered an injury in the middle of the 2018 season. He threw for over 2,000 yards that season while passing for 13 touchdowns. Even though Mullens did a great job as a rookie back up, he still had some struggles. He caught the turnover bug during that season with his 10 interceptions as games as a starter.
Mullens was also a starter in the 2020 season, after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered another injury. He had a similar year as he did in 2018. The former 49ers quarterback passed for over 2,000 yards and passed for 12 touchdowns during his campaign with the 49ers last year. He also had similar touchdown to interception ratio as he had 12 interceptions that season, which was a little more than in 2018.
What can Mullens do for the Eagles?
It’s more than likely Mullens will be one of the Eagles backups if he makes the team. He’s proven that he can salvage a season in the past if the starter gets hurt. Mullens has a great arm and has the mobility to get out of the pocket if the offensive line breaks down. He can also read defenses well, which make him trustworthy if the Eagles are running a bad offensive play according to what he sees from the defense. Mullens also has experience, which the rookie Jamie Newman does not, which could make him fair better on getting a spot on the Eagles roster in 2021.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this was a pretty smart signing for the Eagles. Mullens adds more depth to their off-season roster and gives them another choice in picking an optimal quarterback depth chart for the 2021 season. It is a tossup if he makes the Eagles roster this season. He will have to do well in training camp and show his skills during the preseason games. It also depends on if the Eagles are wanting more experience at the quarterback position, as the depth chart is very young besides Joe Flacco. This concludes the Eagles player spotlight on Nick Mullens.
