Eagles Game Preview: San Francisco 49ers

Matthew BrownBy Matthew BrownSeptember 17, 2021Updated:September 17, 20215 Mins Read

The Eagles will look to keep their momentum going after their big victory against the Falcons last weekend. They have a new challenge ahead of them as they face the San Francisco 49ers this coming Sunday at home. It will be nice to see Lincoln Financial Field packed for the Eagles’ first regular-season game. The Eagles come into this game against San Francisco as underdogs, which will probably be the case all year. As of writing this, the 49ers are favored by a field goal coming into this game. This article will preview the Eagles’ upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Eagles Offense

Jalen Hurts needs to stay hot

Jalen Hurts needs to capitalize off his big performance last week. He had 264 yards and 3 touchdowns in that game against the Falcons. He will be facing a 49ers team that has a possibility to win the NFC West this year if Jimmy Garoppolo can stay healthy. Hurts needs to take care of the ball during this game and avoid turning the ball over as he did in Atlanta. He needs to stick to passing being his first instinct. Hurts has the attributes to be a great pocket passer. He has arm strength but he just needs work on his accuracy a little. He has great mobility but he should only run with the ball when it’s necessary to avoid injury. The Eagles do not need injuries at the quarterback position this year.

The Eagles need to get the ball to Devonta Smith and their speedy Receivers

Hurts needs to get the ball to Devonta Smith any chance he gets. He proved last week against the Falcons that he is a legit NFL wide receiver. He showed that his route running skills are still great and that he can score. Hurts needs to take more shots with Smith down the field during this game. Smith’s ability to create space from the defender in combination with excellent hands should be enough to create some explosive plays against the 49ers’ defense.

It is also necessary that the Eagles get their speedy receiver Quez Watkins involved in this game. He only had 23 yards receiving in his game against the Falcons. Watkins is good in the short passing game and using his speed and elusiveness to break away from defenders. They should use Watkins more during screen passes and slants so he can make some plays for the Eagles’ offense. The Eagles also need to focus on the play-action passing game and getting their big tight ends involved against the 49ers. The Eagles need to find a way to utilize Zach Ertz and make him the weapon he used to be before the 2020 season. If Ertz and Dallas Goedert get going, this Eagles offense has a chance to do something special.

Keep giving Gainwell and Sanders the rock

Miles Sanders looked good against the Falcons last week. He showed that he can find creases in the defensive line and burst through for some pretty good yardage. It would be nice to see him rush for 100 yards this game and score a touchdown. The Eagles also need to stick with Kenneth Gainwell as he has shown he can give the Eagles production in the running and passing game.

The Eagles Defense

The Eagles’ defense needs to bring the pressure against Jimmy Garoppolo. He looked really sharp in his first regular-season game against the Lions. He had 314 yards and one interception during that game. He is accurate and doesn’t make many mistakes passing the ball.

Deebo Samuel is another guy the Eagles need to look out for during this game. He burned the Lions for 189 receiving yards. The Eagles’ secondary does have a better chance at slowing him down as their secondary is better than the Lions. The Eagles have their elite corner in Darius Slay and Steven Nelson flying around the field which should make life hard for Samuel to get open.

The Eagles got off to a slow start stopping the run early against the Falcons but got better as the game went on. As long as Alex Singleton and TJ Edwards are making plays and the defensive line stays stout then the Eagles should be fine in that category.

The defense held the Falcons to six points last week, which is great for an Eagles team that was picked to be one of the worst teams in the league. If they play the same way on defense this coming week then the Eagles should come out of the game with a win. This has been the Eagles Game Preview for the San Francisco 49ers game.
