The newest team to reveal their new NFL-sanctioned alternate helmet is the Detroit Lions. It features the logo used by the team from 1946-1969, and is metallic blue in color. For the majority of their tenure as a franchise, Lions helmets have traditionally been silver.
The NFL’s official Twitter account tweeted out a few pictures of the new helmet via Twitter on Wednesday.
In 2021, the NFL announced that teams will be able to sport alternate helmet after scrapping the rule back in 2013 due to fears that switching back and forth between helmets would be less safe than using one version.
Many have taken the Lions’ route of using throwback logos on the new helmets, such as the Falcons, Patriots and Cowboys. Shortly after teams release their new designs, a schedule usually is released stating when they’ll be worn. No such schedule exists for the Lions just yet.
