Washington has used the first franchise tag of the offseason. The team has franchise tagged defensive tackle Daron Payne, which would earn him $18.9 million next season if he chooses to sign it, but the two sides could also potentially come to terms on a new long-term deal.
The Commanders’ official Twitter account announced the news on Tuesday.
In 2018, Washington drafted Payne out of Alabama with the 13th overall pick out of the University of Alabama. He and the Crimson Tide had won the College Football National Championship in 2017. He has been with the team through all three monikers they’ve owned since 2018.
2022 was Payne’s first Pro Bowl season, in a contract year. In 17 games (17 starts), he had 64 tackles, 11.5 sacks, five pass deflections and a safety. He managed to surpass his previous career-high sack total by 6.5 sacks.
