Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is in critical condition after suffering cardiac arrest on the field during Monday Night Football. He was given CPR and AED after delivering a hit on ball carrier Tee Higgins during the first quarter of the game. He was then taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma center.
ESPN released a statement from Hamlin’s family on Tuesday afternoon.
After the hit, Hamlin got up and took a few steps before falling down to the ground. Medical staff then came out, followed by players from both teams surrounding him, then, finally, an ambulance was brought out. Apparently, he was given CPR, put on a stretcher, put back down onto the ground, then finally taken out of the stadium.
The game was temporarily suspended, and reports said that the NFL wanted to give the teams time to warm up before resuming the game. The league has denied it wanted to restart the game. In any case, both head coaches got together and decided that the teams would return to their locker rooms.
After some time, but no real fanfare, the game was officially postponed. There is no word on when or if the game will resume, or what would happen to both teams’ records and seeding if it is officially stricken from the schedule. TGH will provide updates on the situation as it develops.
We extend our thoughts, sympathies and well-wishes to Hamlin, his family and his teammates.
