Dallas Cowboys: 5 Things to Watch in Week 17

Publish Date: December 24, 2019

The Dallas Cowboys lost to the Eagles and now take on the Washington Redskins. With every game of the season, there will be things to watch and pay attention to. Here are five things to watch for in week 17.

1. The Scoreboard

This week, the Cowboys will be trying to win their game, but they will also be watching the scoreboard. If they win and the Eagles lose to the Giants, the Cowboys will make the playoffs. Dallas should be able to take care of business, but the Eagles losing to the Giants isn’t likely.

The Cowboys have to hope Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley have another big day. They both played well in their game against the Redskins last week. While the team will try to win, their eyes will drift to the scoreboard for the shot at making the playoffs.

2. Playcalling

Playcalling has been a huge issue for the Cowboys this season. They haven’t always stuck to what is working. The Cowboys have also struggled to score points, even though they move the ball well. They’ll need to do better against the Redskins this weekend.

Against the Eagles, Ezekiel Elliot only had 13 carries. That number will have to be increased. What will also change the way the team calls plays is Dak Prescott’s shoulder injury. He was inaccurate with a lot of his throws against the Eagles and will need to do much better in this game.

3. Amari Cooper’s Play

Cooper has had a great season for the Cowboys, but has been ineffective lately. He has battled injuries this year and hasn’t produced over the last several weeks. In the last two games, Cooper has five receptions for 43 yards.

This team likely would’ve been able to qualify for the playoffs if Cooper had stayed healthy. That is in the past, so now Cooper has to produce going forward. The Redskins have a shaky secondary, but do have one good corner in Quinton Dunbar. If Prescott is off his game, Cooper needs to step it up and make things better.

4. DeMarcus Lawrence

It is no secret that DeMarcus Lawrence hasn’t had a great season. He has had to go through double teams and hasn’t been able to produce that much. So far this season, Lawrence has just five sacks. For how much the Cowboys are paying him, Lawrence needs to produce more.

It will still be a disappointing season, but Lawrence simply can’t end the season with just five sacks. He is simply too talented of a player to let that be the case. Lawrence needs to have a big game to bring his stats up to a respectable range.

5. Jason Garrett’s Hot Seat

As the game wears on, the pressure will continue to mount. Jason Garrett has been on the hot seat ever since the season hasn’t gone as planned. If the Cowboys aren’t winning or the Eagles are winning, Garrett may want to start preparing to be fired.

There is always the possibility that Jerry Jones hangs on for another season, but this team needs to make a change for next season if they don’t make the playoffs.
