Dak Prescott Out 6-8 Weeks with Thumb Injury

Publish Date: September 12, 2022

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has suffered a thumb injury. In Week 1’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Prescott hit his hand on a defensive lineman while throwing the ball, injuring his hand bad enough to require surgery. His timetable for return is reportedly 6-8 weeks.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Monday.

Prescott, a fourth round pick out of Mississippi State in the 2016 NFL Draft, has been a Cowboy for his entire career. After winning the starting role, he started every game for the Dallas until 2020, when he injured his ankle in Week 5.

In his 85 career starts, Prescott has a record of 53-32. He has thrown for over 22,000 yards and 143 touchdowns to 50 interceptions. His best year came in 2019, when he had 30 touchdowns to 11 interceptions and almost eclipsed 5,000 yards, despite Dallas finishing with a record of 8-8. The team will now have to cope with a backup, perhaps making a trade or a signing for a more high-end quarterback.

Stay tuned for more breaking NFL content, including preseason moves, contract updates and more news from every team.
