The Cleveland Browns are getting set to release tight end Austin Hooper. This release is sacrificing two years of his contract, which was signed before the 2020 season began. It can be assumed the Browns are releasing this young tight end as a move to save cap space.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the news via Twitter on Wednesday.
Hooper was a third round draft pick in 2016 by the Atlanta Falcons. He played with the Falcons for four seasons before signing a deal with the Browns. His deal with Cleveland at the outset of 2020 was for $44 million over four years.
In 2021, Hooper played 16 out of 17 games, starting all of them. He had 345 yards and three touchdowns on 38 receptions. His best year was 2019, his last in Atlanta, when he racked up 787 yards and six touchdowns on 75 receptions. All of those are career-bests.
He can now sign with any team he chooses, becoming a free agent after the release.
