The Chiefs have cut two players to trim their roster to the regular season’s allotted 53 players. Wide receiver Josh Gordon and defensive tackle have both been cut by Kansas City. Gordon had played with the team since 2021, and Shelton has been a Chief for just this offseason.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday.
Shelton has been a bit of an NFL journeyman. He was first drafted by the Browns with the 12th overall pick of the first round in 2015. He played there for three seasons before joining the Patriots for two seasons. Shelton was lucky enough to be on the roster when the Patriots won Super Bowl LIII over the Rams. After that, he spent time with the Lions and Giants before trying to make the final cuts of the Chiefs’ 2022 roster.
Gordon has had a complicated NFL career, having been suspended and reinstated several times. Apart from that, he has been a good receiver for the Browns, Patriots and Seahawks. He won Super Bowl LIII as a member of the Patriots. However, with a crowded receiving core during his time with the Chiefs, he has not been given much work. Now, he will be placed on waivers as another team in need of receiving help may grab him.
