
Cam Newton battled with rookie Mac Jones for the starting quarterback spot in New England, but has now been released by the team according to Jim McBride.
Newton, 32, is a former no. 1 overall pick and MVP of the league. Last year with the Patriots, Newton passed for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions on 65.8 percent completion. He signed a one year deal before last season and this season with the team.
Over his career, Newton made three Pro Bowls and was a one-time All-Pro. In his nine seasons in Carolina, before joining the Patriots, Newton helped lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance. For his career, Newton has passed for 31,698 yards, 190 touchdowns and 118 interceptions on 60.8 percent completion. He also has 5,398 rushing yards and 70 touchdown on the ground.
With the release of Newton, the rookie Jones will be the starting quarterback. The Patriots selected Jones with the 15th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. In his final year at Alabama, Jones passed for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and four interceptions on 77.4 percent completion. He helped Alabama win the National Championship before declaring for the draft.
Jones will be looking to lead the Patriots back to the playoffs after the team missed out last season.
