The Cleveland Browns are planning to cut defensive back John Johnson at the start of the new league year, on March 15. Johnson was entering the final season of his three-year contract, but now will be able to sign with any team.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday morning.
Johnson was drafted out of Boston College in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He played for four seasons in Los Angeles before signing a new deal with the Browns the year before the Rams would go on to win the Super Bowl.
In 2022, Johnson played all 17 games, collecting 101 tackles, 0.5 sacks, four passes defended, two forced fumbles and an interceptions. His tackle numbers were the second-best of his career and he has had at least one interception in all six seasons of his career.
