The Cleveland Browns have now parted ways with their defensive coordinator after three seasons on the job. This was Woods’ first defensive coordinator job, but was far from his first position in the NFL. Due to his wealth of experience, he will likely be a position coach by the time the 2023 season begins.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Monday.
Woods began his college coaching career back in 1992 with Muskingum College. He held seven positions with seven schools from 1992-2003 before entering the NFL, mostly serving as a defensive backs coach. He took that knowledge into the league in 2004, when he became a defensive quality control coach with the Buccaneers.
After graduating from a quality control coach to an NFL defensive backs coach, he would hold that position for 14 seasons that spanned five different teams; most notably, the Minnesota Vikings, where he spent the bulk of that time. He also served as a passing game coordinator in San Francisco before landing the Browns’ DC positon.
