The Chicago Bears are starting backup quarterback Nathan Peterman in Week 18 against the Minnesota Vikings. According to the team, Justin Fields has a hip injury that will end his season. Being that they are eliminated from playoff contention, this could be a move to not only give Fields rest, but solidify a high draft position.
PFF’s Ari Meirov reported the news via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.
Peterman was a fifth round draft pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He played for two seasons there, then spent 2018-2021 in Oakland/Las Vegas after being cut by the Bills. After his contract Raiders contract expired, he joined the Bears.
In one of the most infamous performances in NFL history, Peterman started a game for the struggling Tyrod Taylor in Week 11 of 2017. He managed to throw five interceptions in the first half, and was eventually replaced by Taylor. Peterman has appeared in 12 NFL games throwing for 598 yards, three touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
