Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered an ankle injury in Week 5’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Mayfield’s injury is one of a few high ankle sprains that have cropped up in 2022; most notably to Patriots’ quarterback Mac Jones.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Monday.
The injury to Mayfield was reported very soon after the Panthers announced that they have fired head coach Matt Rhule after a 1-4 start to the season. Rhule went 11-27 in three seasons (plus five games). Former Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks will take over head coaching duties.
Wilks will have P.J. Walker as his starting quarterback, in all likelihood. Walker has started two games for the Panthers, going 2-0. However, he has thrown just two touchdowns to eight interceptions so far in his NFL career. It is unclear how long Mayfield will be sidelined due to his injury at time of writing.
