The Arizona Cardinals have placed the transition tag on running back Kenyan Drake according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
Giving Drake the transition tag allows the Cardinals the right of first refusal if he negotiates a contract with a different team. He was set to be an unrestricted free agent. If the Cardinals don’t match the offer of another team, Drake will be lost and they will receive no compensation. Drake will earn around $8.4 million if he plays on the transition tag according to Sportrac.
Drake, 26, was traded to the Cardinals from the Dolphins in the middle of the year last season. He rushed for a total of 817 yards and eight touchdowns in total for the 2019 season. The Alabama product has 2,175 career rushing yards and 1,107 career receiving yards.
By the Cardinals committing this amount of money to Drake, it means they have a lot of money tied up in the running back position. David Johnson is set to make over $10 million next season as well.
