5 Potential Trade Destinations for Jonathan Taylor

Publish Date: August 28, 2023

Jonathan Taylor has requested a trade from the Indianapolis Colts. Owner Jim Irsay has stated that he won’t trade him, but things can change. If they do, here are five potential trade destinations for Jonathan Taylor.

Potential Trade Destinations for Jonathan Taylor

5. Washington Commanders

Washington has some cap space this season, sitting at over $13 million. They also have a quarterback on a rookie contract in Sam Howell. The Commanders should be able to make a trade and a long-term contract work if they are willing to make the deal.

Currently, the Commanders have Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson in the backfield, who have had some production, but not anywhere close to Taylor’s. With a new ownership group coming in, they may want to make a splash and get a better running game to better support Sam Howell at quarterback.

4. Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings cleared a lot of cap space this offseason, with over $18 million available for use. Unlike the Commanders, they don’t have a quarterback on a rookie deal, so agreeing to a long-term contract may be hard to do. They still could trade for him and figure out the details of a long-term deal later.

After cutting Dalvin Cook earlier this offseason, the Vikings are thin at the running back position. Alexander Mattison is set to be the starter, while Ty Chandler, Kene Nwangwu and DeWayne McBride will be competing behind him. It is a little abnormal for a team that made the playoffs last season to get rid of their star running back, so if they decide they want to replace him, a trade for Taylor could make sense.

3. Miami Dolphins

Miami has over $13 million in cap space this season, which is impressive given the number of talented players they have added to their team. A long-term contract could be difficult to work out, but the Dolphins could use Taylor as a rental if the Colts are willing to trade him.

It has been speculated that the Dolphins would add a running back in free agency, but they haven’t made a move on that front. They do have Jeff Wilson Jr. and Raheem Mostert who were productive and added Devon Achane in the 2023 NFL Draft. If they want to make a Super Bowl run this year, Taylor can help their chances.

2. Carolina Panthers

The Panthers have over $20 million in cap space this season. Additionally, they have Bryce Young set to start his career on a rookie contract. That leaves plenty of room to work on an extension with Taylor and keep him for several more years.

The Panthers did sign Miles Sanders this offseason, but Taylor would be an upgrade. He could help take pressure off of Young by giving him a running game to rely on. Taylor played for Frank Reich in Indianapolis and Reich could campaign to make a trade for his former running back.

1. Chicago Bears

Chicago has almost $35 million in cap space for this season. With Justin Fields still on a rookie contract, they have some flexibility for the next few seasons. If the Bears want to be aggressive they could trade for Taylor and sign him to a longer deal past this season.

The Bears let David Montgomery walk in free agency. Khalil Herbert is looking to take over the starting job. D’Onta Foreman was added in free agency and Roschon Johnson was drafted as well. Taylor would be an upgrade and with so much cap space, a move could be made to help bolster the offense. Bears coach Matt Eberflus was the defensive coordinator in Indianapolis before taking the job in Chicago, so he also has some familiarity with Taylor.
