5 Potential Landing Spots for Stephon Gilmore

Publish Date: October 6, 2021

In a surprising move, the New England Patriots have decided to cut cornerback Stephon Gilmore. There will be a good market for him now that he is free to sign with any team. Here are the potential landing spots for Stephon Gilmore.

1. Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have a much-improved defense, but most teams need upgrades at corner. They have Trevon Diggs playing at a high level and Anthony Brown has played decently, but Gilmore would really upgrade the defense. Pair that with an offense that scores a lot of points and a division that is very winnable, and Gilmore could consider the Cowboys.

Cap space could be an issue, but the Cowboys can figure things out. They have nearly $4.5 million in cap space for the remainder of this year and are projected to be way over the cap for next season. With restructured contracts and cuts in the offseason, the Cowboys could make it work. Jerry Jones has said in the past that he would open up his checkbook to win another championship and this may be his best opportunity to prove that. That is especially true with Dak Prescott’s brother tweeting that Gilmore wanted to come to the Cowboys years ago.

2. Green Bay Packers

After a lot of drama in the offseason, the Packers have settled things down and are 3-1. Aaron Rodgers has their offense exactly where they should be, but the defense, as usual, could use some help. Jaire Alexander is one of the best corners in the game, but he may miss significant time with a shoulder injury. Behind him, the Packers have Kevin King, who has struggled, and Eric Stokes, who is a rookie.

WIth it likely being Rodgers last year in Green Bay, Gilmore will likely want to sign a one-year contract with the team. Fortunately for the Packers they actually have some cap space to work with this season with over $7.2 available. If the Packers choose to go all-in for Rodgers’ expected last season with the team, they will sign Gilmore.

3. Los Angeles Chargers

Justin Herbert has been a star for the Chargers. The offense is rolling and the defense has allowed fewer than 20 points three times already. Casey Hayward left the team in free agency last year and Chris Harris has been out with a shoulder injury. Rookie Asante Samuel has played well, but the Chargers could move him inside if Gilmore is signed.

The Chargers have saved up their cap space and now sit at $11.8 million. If Gilmore is looking for some security in a long-term deal, the Chargers could make that happen, as they have the third-most cap space in the NFL heading into 2022. Most expect Gilmore to sign with a contender and if he believes in Herbert, he may sign with the Chargers.

4. Kansas City Chiefs

The Cheifs have their offense putting up points again, just like most expected. What wasn’t expected are there were problems on the defensive side of the ball. They are allowing 31.3 points per game this season and need to start improving if they wish to win the Super Bowl again. Mike Hughes and L’Jarius Sneed are the current starting corners, so Gilmore would really upgrade them at the position.

In terms of cap space, the Chiefs have little. They have $3.1 million this season, but do have $30 million for next season. The Chiefs have worked some magic around the cap before in order to keep all of their talented players around. If they can do it again, they may be able to afford Gilmore, who would likely jump at the chance to play for the Chiefs if the offer was right.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Due to injuries at corner, the Buccaneers just signed Richard Sherman. Could they double-dip and get Gilmore too? They have a star-studded roster and seem to keep adding to it. Tom Brady could help convince his teammate to choose Tampa Bay, which may be necessary with how many teams will be trying to sign him.

The Buccaneers have just $3.5 million in cap space this season. While they have $27 million for the 2022 season, they are going to have a lot of tough decisions to make if they try to sign Gilmore to a long-term deal. Helping Brady win another championship could interest Gilmore if the contract details can be worked out.
