In what was the lowest scoring affair in Super Bowl history, the New England Patriots won their sixth NFL championship. The matchup proved to be a battle of defenses as there were only 16 total points scored. With each team having such brilliant coaches, it is no surprise that the Super Bowl ended in the fashion it did. Here is a recap of what we learned in Super Bowl 53.
Belichick and Brady Make History Once Again
After winning their sixth Super Bowl together, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick write themselves into the history books.
Belichick (66) became the oldest coach to ever win a Super Bowl. In addition, the coach tied George Halas and Curly Lambeau for most NFL championships with six.
As for Brady, the signal caller is now the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl at 41 years old. And although Brady did not have the best showing in Super Bowl 53, the win has put him passed Charles Haley for most career wins in a Super Bowl (6).
Brady and Belichick have created a convincing argument of not only being the best quarterback and coach duo in the league, but in NFL history as well. Super Bowl 53 just added multiple accomplishments to that résumé.
Jared Goff is Good, But Needs More Time
The 24-year-old Los Angeles quarterback, Jared Goff, has proven to have a lot of potential this season. But, the performance shown by Goff in Super Bowl 53 showed that he just was not ready for a game with such little room for error.
Pro Bowl running back Todd Gurley was limited for most of the game. Also, wide receiver Cooper Kupp was out with a torn ACL. With these obstacles, Goff needed to be the playmaker for the Rams, a role the quarterback was not able to fulfill on Sunday night.
Goff completed 19 passes for 229 yards on 38 attempts. The young quarterback also threw an interception to end the momentum of Rams’ best drive of the game. With no touchdowns and 50% completion percentage, Goff ended the game with a 57.9 passer rating.
Goff’s performance in the Super Bowl may have been nonproductive, but with 4,688 passing yards and 32 touchdowns on the season, the quarterback shows promise for the future. Goff has progressed throughout his career, and only in his third season, he has made an appearance in the Superbowl. With more time and development, Goff still has the potential to be a great quarterback.
Julian Edelman Shows Hall of Fame Potential
Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman seemed to be the only consistent threat to the Rams defense. With a historic performance and now three Super Bowl rings, Edelman has put himself in Hall of Fame conversations.
Catching 10 passes for 141 yards in Super Bowl 53 was enough to give the wide receiver MVP honors for the game. The MVP performance also added to Edelman’s list of 100+ yard postseason games. Now having six, Edelman is tied with Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin for second most of all time. In addition, Edelman now has the second most receiving yards in postseason history after surpassing Michael Irvin.
Julian Edelman is one the most clutch players in NFL postseason history. The milestones that the wide receiver surpassed on Sunday proved he has what it takes to at least be in Hall of Fame consideration.
