Tampa Bay Buccaneers star linebacker Devin White has requested a trade. With one year left on his deal after the Bucs exercised their fifth year option on him, Tampa likely does not want to trade White due to this contract, but he wants to earn his next deal on a new team.
Here are three potential landing spots/trade destinations for Devin White.
The Buffalo Bills just let linebacker Tremaine Edmunds walk so they wouldn’t have to pay him a large contract. They could stem that loss by trading a few draft picks for Devin White, who’s on his relatively cheap fifth year option.
Buffalo is unadulterated win-now mode. A few mid-to-late round picks will very likely not make a difference for this team while their window is open. Replacing a player like Edmunds with another off-ball threat like White, though, might do exactly that.
Pairing Matt Milano and Von Miller with White will assuredly pay dividends right away. Being that White is in a contract year, he’ll likely play hard to earn a large contract with this winning franchise. And given that he’s outright asked for a trade, the compensation Buffalo would have to send to Tampa won’t mortgage their future. This would be a smart move for the Bills.
Yes, contract extensions for both A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts are upcoming, but Howie Roseman is considered one of the best General Managers in the league for a reason. He can spin those plates while also landing White.
Nakobe Dean will be starting at linebacker no doubt, but he’s going into his sophomore season. Pairing him with a player like White could ensure that a slump is never in question. The Eagles can also offer competitive compensation in the form of draft picks, depending on how all-in they want to go for 2023. White could make this scary defense even scarier, even if he only plays in Philly for one season.
The Vikings are in a limbo of sorts, and if they don’t win soon, some dark days for the franchise could be upcoming. They are absolutely loaded with offensive talent, but despite some decent defensive pieces here and there, their defense was abysmal last year.
Banking on fixing that defense in one or two drafts and led by an offensive coach is not advisable given what some people believe their ceiling could be in the weak NFC. White could be a game-changer on this team immediately, and help the franchise figure out its path moving forward through the playoffs.
