Chris Godwin is entering free agency in 2022, and will certainly have his pick of teams to join. The super star receiver has two 1,000-plus yard seasons in his five years in the NFL, but has not stayed healthy for a full season since he became a full-time starter. In fact, he is battling an ACL tear this offseason, as well, but that may not scare any teams off.
Tom Brady gave Godwin a Super Bowl ring in Super Bowl 55, and had the team ready for another shot at one in 2022, albeit without his services as Godwin was sidelined. If Brady hadn’t retired, it would be almost a no-brainer for Godwin to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but his options widened significantly when he hung it up. Here are three potential landing spots for Chris Godwin in 2022.
New England Patriots
The Patriots spent more money than any team in free agency last season. That trend could continue this year as they took a step forward in 2021, from no playoff appearance to a Wild Card round exit. Godwin would be the perfect piece to spend some extra cap space on for the next few years.
New England’s glaring hole on its roster is easily lack of a deep threat. They have zero receivers that scare any teams past about the line-to-gain. Godwin is exactly that, and is not only a possession receiver but a deep threat in more ways than one. He can break off big runs or run past opposing corners that are pressing. This move makes nothing but sense to expedite Mac Jones’ growth as a passer and the Patriots’ growth in the post-Brady era.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs should be trying to build their own version of the Rams’ super team that just won Super Bowl 56. Not to say their window is closing, but Mahomes’ half-billion dollar contract is only going to hamstring them more and more going forward in terms of cap space. They need to add pieces on medium-length contracts now and lock them down for team-friendly deals.
If Godwin wants to win, there may be no better place to join than Kansas City. No, he would not be a number one (or maybe even a number two) option on this offense, and he would have to take less money than he could earn elsewhere. But, if he takes their offer, he may have another Super Bowl ring on his finger in short order.
Chicago Bears
This would be the money move for Godwin. The Bears have a brand new quarterback that is showing promise in Justin Fields. They have a new coach in Matt Eberflus who will want to implement new systems and a new culture. And Godwin would assuredly be a big part of that new offense as a number one receiver.
Chicago could spend heavily on him, trusting him to burn NFC North corners for years to come. And, if Aaron Rodgers leaves, maybe lead the team to an NFC North title and some playoff appearances. This hinges on the money and the arm of Fields, but it would not be a bad move for either side.
