A large number of potentially difference making Panthers players are apparently on the trade block after Carolina’s firing of head coach Matt Rhule and defensive coordinator Phil Snow. Shaq Thompson is the latest name on that list.
An inside linebacker with a nose for the quarterback would be a boon to just about any team to the league. Here are three possible trade destinations for Shaq Thompson.
Thompson is the kind of player that just screams, “Patriots.” Bill Belichick loves to trade low and sign defensive players that other teams may think are past their prime or not a scheme fit. If any team can find a way to force a scheme fit, it’s New England.
The Pats’ defense has been good this season, as it almost always is under Belichick. But a pass-rushing linebacker like Thompson could help take it to another level. This team is certainly not dead, despite being last in their division. If Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones continue to do enough on offense, the defense, especially with a piece like Thompson, can keep New England afloat.
The Chargers’ defense has been a bit disappointing this year, even though they signed prolific pass rusher Khalil Mack. With the kind of injury bug Los Angeles seems to have, it might have to be up to the defense to propel them back to the playoffs.
Getting to the quarterback is absolutely essential in today’s NFL. An overwhelming pass rush can disrupt an opposing offense and win the game by itself. Pairing Thompson with Mack will split the blockers, and allow one or the other to maybe knock down Patrick Mahomes or Derek Carr. Plus, he can help in the run game, as he’s had over 100 tackles three seasons in a row.
Much like New England, the Seahawks under Pete Carroll love to sign defensive players and find creative ways to use them. Enough is never enough for this team, who likes to shake up their defense and coverages as much as anyone in the league.
Most thought that this would be a lost season for Seattle, but they sit at 3-3 after six weeks due to the surprising play of Geno Smith. This wouldn’t be a Smith-bolstering trade, but it could give the Seahawks yet another way to win. He would fit in this system, that just lost Bobby Wagner in the offseason.
