3 Possible Trade Destinations for Kyrie Irving

Publish Date: February 3, 2023

Controversial Nets point guard Kyrie Irving has reportedly asked for a trade. The trade request is more than likely linked to a lack of long-term contract with his current team. Here are three potential trade destinations for Kyrie Irving.

Los Angeles Lakers

This is really the only viable trade option for Irving. There are some other point guard needy teams, but this one makes the most sense by far. For one, the two sides have been linked since the Lakers failed to get better after the Westbrook trade.

Second, LeBron James and Irving won the NBA Finals together while in Cleveland, and made it to three straight as a tandem. Despite Irving’s controversial nature, the two work well together. Would the Lakers be willing to make another trade and sign him long term? That’s the main question here.

But with him, James and Anthony Davis with Westbrook leading a bench squad, the Lakers would immediately become the favorites to reach the NBA Finals out of the Western Conference. It would mean sacrificing the future for another title, but they might as well as long as LeBron is still a Laker.

Sacramento Kings

The Kings, surprisingly, sit at third in the West right now with a 29-21 record. They are doing this thanks to the play of their own point guard, De’Aaron Fox. But adding a guy with some of the best handles and flashy abilities in the history of the league wouldn’t hurt.

Sacramento absolutely does not need to go all-in this year. But this franchise has been winning-challenged for a very long time. Maybe it makes sense to commit to their winning ways by sacrificing some draft capital for Irving. It would at least make them more recognized in the national media.

Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers are a team of veterans trying to win it all. Either for the first time, or as a last hurrah. John Wall is currently on the roster, but he is notoriously injury prone. Maybe they could supplement that with Irving.

This is a team that loves to rest their players. Having a night-in, night-out swapping of athletic guards could go a long way in the playoffs as long as they commit to keeping everyone healthy. A long-term deal might be tricky, but a trade at least puts the Clippers’ roster above the chaos of the Lakers’ in their own town.
