Dak Prescott is out 6-8 weeks with an injury to his hand. The Cowboys will need a decent replacement at quarterback for Prescott if they hope to salvage their seasons. Here are three possible replacement options for the Cowboys at quarterback.
Cam Newton
Cam Newton is currently a free agent after a short stint with the New England Patriots and a return to the Carolina Panthers. His style of play could be exactly what the Cowboys need to turn their offense and entire season around.
Dallas lost key contributors at the wide receiver position during the offseason. Then, left tackle Tyron Smith went down for the season, robbing Prescott of much-needed protection. Newton does not necessarily need the kind of pocket protection that Prescott does, due to his running prowess.
If Newton can consistently find CeeDee Lamb when it’s time to throw, then that could be just enough to keep the team afloat while awaiting their QB1’s return. In the mean time, mix in a steady diet of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard while also keeping Newton as a running threat to throw off opposing defenses.
Jimmy Garoppolo
Yes, Garoppolo had his contract reworked at the 11th hour by the 49ers to keep him as Trey Lance’s backup. And Garoppolo has a no-trade clause in that new contract. However, he has led a team to a Super Bowl and two NFC Championship games, and remains the highest of high-end backup options.
Without knowing his mindset, it can be assumed that he surely must know that he could be a good starter in the NFL. This could be his chance to yet again make a name for himself if he chooses to waive the no-trade clause. The Cowboys also like to make splashy moves, which incentivizes the Niners to hear a trade offer, as the price could be high.
Cooper Rush
Rush is an uninspiring option, no doubt. But it stands to reason that an uninspiring option at quarterback would follow and uninspiring offseason and beginning of the regular season. This move would be an unofficial punting away of the 2022-2023 campaign.
He has started just one game for the Cowboys, back in 2021, which remains the only start of his career. He did win that game, however. Also, it would not cost the Cowboys anything except wins to bring him up from the practice squad. They might need that money and trade capital to reload for the 2023 season.
