The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Zion Johnson 2022 NFL Draft Profile.
Zion Johnson Background
Position: Offensive Guard/Center
Size: 6-foot-3, 316 pounds
Class: Redshirt Senior
2021 stats: 2021 First-Team All-ACC
Johnson was a star at the FCS level before moving to Boston College, where he excelled as well. Now he is headed to the NFL.
He was lightly recruited out of high school and signed on with Davidson. Johnson played two years for the Wildcats and earned all-conference honors as a sophomore. He then transferred to Boston College. For the Eagles, he played left guard and made the All-ACC Second Team in 2019. The Eagles made a bowl game with his help, finishing the season 6-7. He moved around on the offensive line in 2020, but made the All-ACC Third Team. The Eagles once again won six games with help from Johnson. He decided to return to school for another season in 2021 and made First-Team All-ACC. The Eagles won six games in 2021 with Johnson being one of their best players.
After two good years at Davidson and three solid years at Boston College, Johnson is preparing for the pros. He is currently projected to be a first or second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Zion Johnson Strengths
For an interior lineman, Johnson has good size. He is 6-foot-3 and 316 pounds, but he has more strength than his frame would indicate. To go with his size, he also has tremendous length for a guard, which will help him control his matchups.
Johnson has a very good football IQ. He played multiple positions on the offensive line, which he handled well. Johnson is able to recognize blitzers, twists and stunts and picks them up well. He rarely gets penalties and has solid technique. Johnson adjusted to the speed of the FBS level after moving up from the FCS and could do the same in adjusting to the speed of the NFL game.
His power is great for his frame. While he had experience at tackle, he is best in a phone booth. He can generate power and get a good push in the running game. He clears huge holes for his running backs to run through. Johnson can also anchor as a pass blocker because of his strength.
Zion Johnson Weaknesses
Johnson doesn’t have the best movement skills. His lateral movement can give him trouble, as he struggles to mirror pass rushers. He also sometimes can have trouble getting the second level as a run blocker. Part of the reason why he is moving inside is that he can’t be trusted on an island.
He had trouble with athletic pass rushers in college. The move to the inside will help him with that a little bit, but there are some interior rushers who have speed and flexibility. He needs to get his hands on defenders early and use his power to neutralize these rushers.
His hands could be more consistent. He currently places his hands too high and needs to get them lower to be really effective. Johnson also needs to make sure to get his hands on defenders earlier, without lunging, to control his matchup.
