Zay Flowers 2023 NFL Draft Profile

Publish Date: April 24, 2023

The 2023 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Zay Flowers 2023 NFL Draft Profile.

Zay Flowers Background

Position: Wide Receiver

School: Boston College

Size: 5-foot-10, 177 Pounds

Class: Senior

2022 stats: 78 receptions, 1,077 receiving yards, 13.8 yards per catch, 12 touchdowns

Flowers had a productive career at Boston College, even with multiple injuries at the quarterback position limiting his effectiveness. He is now in the 2023 NFL Draft.

As a three-star recruit, Flowers left the state of Florida to play for Boston College. He had 22 catches for 341 yards and three touchdowns in his freshman season. His production improved in 2020, as he had 56 receptions for 892 yards and nine touchdowns. His play helped Boston College to a 6-5 record. In 2021, Flowers had 44 receptions for 746 yards and five touchdowns, as the Eagles went 6-6. For the 2022 season, Flowers caught 78 passes for 1,077 yards and 12 touchdowns. Unfortunately, the Eagles struggled despite his good play, as they limped to a 3-9 record.

After Flowers played four seasons at Boston College, he entered the 2023 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.

Zay Flowers Strengths

Flowers is a deep threat because of his speed. He has good acceleration and has a top gear that most defensive backs don’t. His ability to get past defenders was shown repeatedly and once he is by them, he shows good ball-tracking skills. Teams wanting to stretch the field vertically and keep safeties honest will be able to take Flowers.

While he rushes his routes sometimes, he does have good route-running ability that helps him create separation. He can get in and out of his breaks quickly, as he sinks his hips and turns well. Flowers has good releases to start the play as well. He can sell his routes better with some work.

When Flowers gets the ball in his hands he is a threat to take it to the house. He has great speed, but he also is elusive, making defenders miss with juke moves and cuts. Teams can get him the ball underneath and he can get big gains out of it. Along with his physical attributes, he also shows good vision as a runner to maximize plays.

Zay Flowers Weaknesses

Flowers is a little below the average for size at the NFL level. He stands 5-foot-10 and 177 pounds. This lack of size could be a problem, as he could struggle with bigger, physical corners. He also has a limited catch radius. To be more successful at the NFL level, Flowers will need to add play strength. He could also hold his blocks longer in the run game with added strength.

There are too many drops on his tape for how good his ball skills are at times. Flowers has a lot of focus drops, but he also has trouble hauling in passes that are out of frame. With his lack of play strength, he also struggles to make contested catches.

While he has shown the ability to run routes well, he does rush the routes at times. He needs to work on selling his routes on every single rep. There are times were he can go completely free from coverage, but he sometimes rushes his routes rather than running them honestly. He can create more separation at the next level by having more nuance to his routes.

Projected Draft Range: First Round Pick-Second Round Pick
