The 2023 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Zach Charbonnet 2023 NFL Draft Profile.
Position: Running Back
School: UCLA
Size: 6-foot, 214 pounds
Class: Senior
2022 Stats: 195 carries, 1,359 rushing yards, 14 rushing touchdowns, 7.0 yards per rush, 37 receptions, 321 receiving yards
Charbonnet spent time at Michigan and UCLA during his college career and was productive at both schools. Now he is in the 2023 NFL Draft.
As a four-star recruit out of California, Charbonnet signed with Michigan to start his college career. As a true freshman, he rushed for 726 yards and 11 touchdowns. His play helped the Wolverines go 9-4. He played just five games in 2020 and rushed for 124 yards. After the season he transferred to UCLA. In 2021, Charbonnet rushed for 1,137 yards and 13 touchdowns. He helped the Bruins go 8-4. Charbonnet improved in 2022 by rushing for 1,359 yards and 14 touchdowns. He led the team to a 9-4 overall record.
After opting out of the Sun Bowl, Charbonnet declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a mid-round pick.
Charbonnet has good size for an NFL running back. He stands at 6-foot and 214 pounds, which are above the NFL average. HIs size gives him excellent power and contact balance. He is able to pick up first downs and touchdowns in short yardage situations.
He has solid vision and can find the ideal hole to take to pick up yards. Charbonnet is patient and lets his blocks develop, which helps him see exactly where to run. He also has solid vision at the second level and in the open field to maximize runs.
At UCLA, he really improved his chance of being an every down back by improving his third down abilities. He is a decent receiver with good hands. On top of that he is good in pass pro with good recognition and the size to take on rushers.
Charbonnet has trouble accelerating up to top speed quickly. There are times where his lack of burst can cause holes in front of him to close up and he can be tackled behind the line of scrimmage. The lack of quickness limits his ability for big runs.
He doesn’t have much elusivity. Charbonnet has tight hips and doesn’t change directions quickly. He doesn’t have the ability to juke defenders. Charbonnet wins by using his good power and average long speed. He won’t show much creativity in the open field.
His pad level is too high as a runner. Charbonnet is an upright runner, which as mentioned makes it hard for him to cut, but also can make it easy for defenders to take out his legs. There are successful upright runners in the NFL, but they aren’t very prevalent.
Projected Draft Range: Second Round Pick-Fourth Round Pick
Draft Grade: Fourth-Round Pick
