Howard was a three-star recruit in the class of 2020 and chose to play for Kansas State. He played a little bit from the start, passing for over 1,500 yards in his first two seasons with the Wildcats. In 2022, he passed for 1,633 yards, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions on 59.8 percent completion. The Wildcats won 10 games that season and made the Sugar Bowl. For the 2023 season, Howard passed for 2,643 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on 61.3 percent completion. His play helped the Wildcats win nine games. Following the season, he transferred to Ohio State. With the Buckeyes, he passed for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on 73 percent completion. He led the Ohio State offense well and the team won the National Championship Game in the first year of the 12-team College Football Playoff.
Following the National Championship Game, Howard will prepare for the pros. He is currently projected to be a mid-round pick.
Howard has the prototypical size and athleticism for a modern day quarterback. He is 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds, which are both good for the next level. Howard has good strength that comes from his size. He moves well for his size, as he is a threat to escape the pocket to run or use his legs on designed run plays.
His accuracy, especially to the short and intermediate parts of the field was impressive. He completed a high percentage of his passes at Ohio State. Howard puts the ball on the money in the short areas of the field to allow room after the catch. While he is more inconsistent attacking down the field, he is still capable of throwing with nice touch and allowing the receiver to make plays on the ball.
At Ohio State, Howard showed the ability to make full-field reads. He looked like he could operate a pro offense. Howard had the ability to show good pre-snap recognition to help, but he was able to go through his progressions quickly and get the ball to open receivers.
Howard has inconsistent decision-making, putting the ball in harm’s way too much. There are times where he thinks he reads things well pre-snap, but does so wrong and throws into coverage. Other times, he has too much faith in his arm or the receivers he is targeting and puts the ball up in a 50/50 situation. Taking care of the football has to be a priority for Howard.
His mechanics can improve, as he can have a better base to throw off of. When he doesn’t have a solid base, he throws inaccurately. Cleaning up his mechanics will make him a more consistent player, but it could take some time to fix this issue.
While he has adequate arm strength, Howard falls far from elite. He can make the short throws, but can struggle to throw with enough velocity to push the ball outside of the numbers and down the field. Howard can make most throws asked of him, but his arm talent isn’t as good as other players in the class.
Projected Draft Range: Third Round Pick-Fifth Round Pick
Draft Grade: Third Round Pick
