Tyree Wilson 2023 NFL Draft Profile

Publish Date: April 24, 2023

The 2023 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Tyree Wilson 2023 NFL Draft Profile.

Tyree Wilson Background

Position: Edge Rusher

School: Texas Tech

Size: 6-foot-6, 275 pounds

Class: Senior

2022 Stats: 61 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery

Wilson started his career at Texas A&M but found success at Texas Tech over the last few seasons. Now he is in the 2023 NFL Draft.

As a three-star prospect out of high school, Wilson signed with Texas A&M. In one season with the Aggies, he registered 12 total tackles, three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Following the season, Wilson transferred to Texas Tech. In 2020, he had 10 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. For the 2021 season, Wilson registered 38 total tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks. He had a breakout season and the Red Raiders went 7-6 on the season. Wilson returned for the 2022 season. He had 61 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss and seven sacks. His play helped the Red Raiders win eight games.

After suffering a foot injury, Wilson could only play in 10 games and then declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.

Tyree Wilson Strengths

Wilson has the prototypical size for an NFL edge rushers. He stands at 6-foot-6 and 275 pounds, which puts him above the average. With his size comes great length as well, which he knows how to use. He also has great strength, which sets him apart from other edge rushers in the class.

His ability against the run has been proven in his production. He uses his length and strength to shed blocks. Wilson then shows good pursuit and can get after the football. When the play is to his side, he is able to make the tackle with a good range thanks to his length. If it is to the other side of the field, he crashes down and is sometimes able to make the play.

Currently, Wilson shows he can win as a pass rusher due to his strength. He can line up either on the outside or on the inside because of how strong he is. Wilson shows a good bull rush that he uses to push linemen back into the pocket. He then can disengage and get after the quarterback.

Tyree Wilson Weaknesses

Wilson needs to add more pass-rushing moves to his skillset and have a better pass-rush plan to see more production. As mentioned, he mostly wins because of his power. Adding more pass rush moves will make him tougher to block. He also could add more counter moves and be more prepared to battle offensive linemen when they stop his initial rush.

While his size is great, his speed and flexibility leave a little bit to be desired. Wilson doesn’t win with speed or the ability to bend around the edge. When he tries to bend, he can lose balance or his pad level will be too high. He is actually more of a fit to rush from the interior because of this.

Some defensive linemen are able to show a good burst at the snap of the football, but Wilson only sporadically shows that. If he were to explode when the ball was snapped, he could be more effective as offensive linemen would have to react to him rather than the other way around.
