Tyler Steen Background

Position: Offensive Tackle

School: Alabama

Size: 6-foot-6, 321 pounds

Class: Redshirt Senior

2022 Stats: Second Team All-SEC

Steen is one of the more unique players in college football, as he spent time on both sides of the ball. Now he is an offensive line prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft.

As a three-star defensive end prospect, Steen signed with Vanderbilt. He spent time on the defensive and offensive line as a freshman. In 2019, he started 12 games at right tackle for Vanderbilt. The team struggled with a 3-9 record. He moved to left tackle for the 2020 season and started nine games. Unfortunately, the Commodores lost all nine contests that season. Steen stayed at left tackle for 2021, but Vanderbilt went just 2-10. Following the season, Steen transferred to Alabama. He started at left tackle and was named Second Team All-SEC. His play helped the Crimson Tide win 11 games, including the Sugar Bowl.

Following the Sugar Bowl, Steen entered the 2023 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a mid-round pick.

Tyler Steen Strengths

Steen has solid size for an NFL offensive tackle. He stands 6-foot-6 and 321 pounds. With his size comes good strength for the position. He is able to sustain blocks with his strength and move defenders out of the way. He also has a solid anchor when pass-blocking.

His awareness is good, as he shows he is a former defensive lineman. He understands how defenses will attack him. Steen is quick to recognize where blitzes are coming from and can pick them up. He also sees twists and stunts coming, with the ability to communicate with his teammates.

He is an average athlete and is able to move decently. Steen can get to the second level on running plays. He also shows decent athleticism when pass-protecting on the edge. Steen won’t blow anyone away with his athleticism, but he does have enough to be a successful tackle.

Tyler Steen Weaknesses

While he has good size, Steen has below-average length for the position. His arms measured in at 32 3/4 inches at the NFL Combine. He struggles with lengthy edge rushers currently. His lack of length may result in him moving inside to guard.

Steen needs to work on his hand usage and timing to more effectively sustain blocks. He can have better punch timing. Steen also allows his hands to get too wide, which lets defensive linemen to get into him easier.

His pad level and balance can also be problems. He comes too high out of his stance and loses some of his power at times. In addition to that, Steen lunges and gets off balance way too offense. He needs to stay patient and low in order to win more often.

Projected Draft Range: Third Round Pick-Fifth Round Pick

Draft Grade: Fourth-Round Pick
