For his outstanding performance in high school, Wirfs was named a U.S. Army All-American before staying in state to attend Iowa. While at Iowa, he embraced the culture and continued to progress into a quality tackle prospect.

As a freshman in 2017, Wirfs started off the year on the bench, but broke into the starting lineup down the stretch. For his sophomore season, Wirfs started 12 games, as the Hawkeyes finished 9-4 with a win over Mississippi State in the Outback Bowl. He was a star for Iowa as a junior, earning All-American honors and helping the Hawkeyes to 10 wins including a victory in the Holiday Bowl over USC.

While there are a lot of good tackles in the 2020 NFL Draft class, Wirfs has made a case to be one of the first selected. Wirfs should expect to be selected in the middle of the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Strengths

Wirfs has great strength and power. He is able to sustain his blocks because he is usually much stronger than his opponent. The power is evident in both the running game and the passing game. He gets off the ball well, which makes his power even harder to deal with.

He specifically is a great run blocker, which is a lot of thanks to his power. Wirfs clears wide holes for running backs to get through. This keeps the chains moving and can spring big runs. A lot of times Wirfs is able to block his man and then get to the second level as well to block a linebacker.

His footwork is really good, as he has good foot speed and rarely gets off balance. This helps him stick with more athletic pass rushers. His feet help him generate power and because he has good foot speed, he can get upfield to make blocks.

Weaknesses

His hand placement and timing needs to be better to prevent him from being beaten. Wirfs lost one on one matchups because of his handwork at Iowa. If he places his hands more accurately and does it with better timing, he can start winning even more matchups.

Wirfs isn’t the greatest athlete for a tackle prospect. He lacks bend and flexibility as well. If pass rushers are faster than him, they can get by him. Placing his hands better will help with that, but he may always struggle with the uber-athletic pass rushers in the NFL.

While he did start at left tackle for one game at Iowa, Wirfs has mostly played right tackle throughout his career. He will make a good right tackle, but teams usually want to use early first-round picks on protecting the quarterback’s blindside. Teams may try to convert him to the left side, but he is unproven and will need some time to develop.
