Lawrence has been a highly-touted draft prospect ever since stepping foot on Clemson’s campus. His college career didn’t disappoint and now he has declared for the 2021 NFL Draft.
Going into college, Lawrence was one of the top recruits in the country. In his freshman year on campus, Lawrence initially split time with returning starter Kelly Bryant before taking over the offense. Lawrence finished the season with 3,280 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and four interceptions on 65.2 percent completion. Clemson went 15-0 and won the National Championship that year. As a sophomore, he passed for 3,665 yards, 36 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 65.8 percent completion. The Tigers lost in the National Championship to LSU during Lawrence’s second season. For 2020, Lawrence led his team back to the CFP with 3,153 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions on 69.2 percent completion.
Fans and scouts alike have been waiting for Lawrence to go pro for a few years, as he is a projected franchise quarterback. Lawrence will likely be the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Lawrence has the build of a prototypical NFL quarterback. He stands at 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds, which is not only great height to see over the line of scrimmage, but also shows that he is decently filled out. His size allows him to have decent play strength as well.
His arm talent is among the best in the class. Lawrence is capable of making any throw asked of him at the NFL level. This includes tough passes that go from the hash mark to the opposite sideline. He can throw a good deep ball, but more importantly gets a lot of zip on his passes when he needs to. Lawrence can fit the ball into tight windows, which is going to be needed in the pros.
He has great accuracy as well, which extends to all areas of the field. On short throws he not only gives receivers the chance to catch the ball, but puts it in a place that allows them to run after the catch. He can fit the ball over linebackers, but under safeties to show his accuracy in the intermediate passing game. Lawrence won’t always hit on deep balls, but shows good accuracy down the field as well.
While Lawrence doesn’t have many weaknesses, he does have areas of his game that he’ll need to work on. His mechanics will need some work at the next level. Lawrence doesn’t always step into his throws, which can lead to some inaccuracies. His base can also get too wide, which also causes errant throws. When he displays good mechanics, he can be lethal.
Lawrence isn’t bad at handling pressure, but he sometimes leaves the pocket too early. He has good running ability, but receivers can be left open while he tries to escape the pocket, even when the pressure isn’t too bad. He also has a tendency to throw off of his back foot when the pressure is coming in rather than stepping into his throw, which doesn’t give him his best opportunity to complete passes.
In college, Lawrence has shown the ability to go through his progressions and read the whole field. At times though, he can lock onto one receiver. That worked in college, but he will need to do a better job of not letting that happen at the NFL level.
